Professor Peter Cistulli

Global Chairman Advisory Board

Professor Peter Cistulli is a clinician-researcher with 30 years of experience in the fields of respiratory and sleep medicine. He is a Professor of Sleep Medicine at the University of Sydney (Australia), where he holds the ResMed Chair. He leads the Sleep Research Theme within the multidisciplinary Charles Perkins Centre. He is also Clinical Director of the Sleep Medicine Program in the Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney. His thematic research has focused on the causes of sleep-related breathing disorders and their treatment, with particular reference to oral appliance therapy.

Peter’s research provided pivotal evidence that health outcomes of oral appliance therapy are equivalent to CPAP. This has strongly informed clinical guidelines globally. His work has been recognized through multiple national and international awards. He is a former President of the Australasian Sleep Association and a former board member of the Sleep Health Foundation (Australia).

Assoc. Prof. Fernanda Almeida

Fernanda Almeida holds a dental degree and master’s focused on dental sleep medicine from Brazil, and a Ph.D., also in dental sleep medicine, from the University of British Columbia (Canada). She is currently an Associate Professor at UBC. She teaches dental radiology for undergraduate students (1st, 2nd, and 3rd year) and obstructive sleep apnea for dental hygiene, DMD, graduate orthodontic and prosthodontic students, and her own graduate students (MSc, Ph.D., and post-doctoral fellows).

Fernanda’s research focuses on the role of dentistry in the field of sleep medicine and obstructive sleep apnea.
Her current studies involve the assessment of children related to craniofacial form and obstructive sleep apnea, and for the adult population, her studies focus on the effectiveness of mandibular advancement splints and the identification of the elements of integrated care that are central to providing patient-centered medicine.

Dr. Colleen G. Lance

Dr. Colleen G. Lance is currently Medical Director, Cleveland Clinic Sleep Disorders Center, Hillcrest; Professor and Telemedicine/Distance Health Officer for Sleep Disorders Center; and Medical Director PAP Therapies, Cleveland Clinic Home Care. She also serves as a Staff Physician at the Sleep Disorders Center, Neurological Institute, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and is an Assistant Professor at Lerner College of Medicine. She previously served as Medical Director of Sleep Disorders Centers at Memorial Hermann Sugarland, TX, and University Hospitals of Richmond and Geauga, OH.

Her past academic appointments include assistant professorships in the Department of Internal Medicine at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and Department of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at University Hospitals of Ohio. Dr. Lance is widely published in the area of sleep-disordered breathing and holds Diplomat certification with the American Board of Sleep Medicine and the American Board of Internal Medicine, Sleep Medicine, and is a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine Payor Policy Review Subcommittee.

Dr. Keith Matheny

Dr. Keith Matheny is a Vanderbilt-trained Otolaryngologist practicing in North Dallas, specializing in Rhinology & Sleep in adults and children. He has a passion for the business aspects of Otolaryngology and new technology, pharmacotherapy & procedures in ENT. Dr. Matheny holds numerous patents & patents pending on bioabsorbable, local drug-delivery implants for use in sinus and ear surgery, founding two device companies around these technologies, Septum Solutions & Otologic Solutions.

He is also the Founder/Chairman/CEO of US ENT Partners, an ENT-focused Group Purchasing Organization reducing the high cost of supplies that ENT physicians use in their office daily, as well as the Founder/Chairman/CEO of Sleep Vigil, a company pioneering the concept of Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) for sleep apnea. Dr. Matheny has numerous journal publications and has given numerous presentations on his clinical research & on various topics related to the business of medicine. In addition, he volunteers in his community, providing charity clinics for multiple school districts around his practice, serving on the local YMCA Board, and as the otolaryngologist for the Dallas Cowboys.

Prof. David M. Rapoport

Dr. David M. Rapoport, MD, is currently Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine and Research Director of the Mount Sinai Health System Integrative Sleep Center. Dr. Rapoport’s research interests center around pulmonary and sleep physiology. He has spent his career studying control of breathing and the upper airway, the epidemiology, causes, consequences, and treatments of sleep-disordered breathing.

Dr. Rapoport was the New York Cohort Principal Investigator of the Sleep Heart Health Study and a large multicenter NIH-sponsored epidemiologic study that assessed the cardiovascular consequences of sleep-disordered breathing. Dr. Rapoport is (co-)author of over 140 publications in peer-reviewed, international journals and holds 37 US Patents.

Dr. Srujal Shah

Dr. Srujal Shah has received the highest achievement as a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine (ABDSM) and the American Sleep & Breathing Academy (ASBA). He has also completed a mini-Residency in Orofacial Pain and TMJ Disorders at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Southern California. He also carries a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from UC San Diego with an emphasis in Signal Processing. Dr. Shah has worked on numerous research projects integrating medicine with engineering.

Dr. Shah limits his practice exclusively to the treatment of sleep apnea and snoring. He lectures nationally, educates other healthcare providers in the field, and has grown his practice, Spark Sleep Solutions, to seven locations in the San Francisco Bay Area, along with relationships with several large-scale medical entities, hospitals, and payers. In addition, Dr. Shah ensures he is at the forefront of advancements in the field through continuing education, committee appointments with the AADSM, ongoing research, and seminars with medical experts throughout the country.

Prof. Dr. Marc Braem

Prof. Dr. Marc Braem graduated as a general dentist and completed his Ph.D. thesis in the field of dental composites and non-destructive mechanical testing. Since 1980 he became affiliated with the University of Antwerp (Belgium), where he is now an emeritus professor related to the Dental Materials Lab that is involved with mechanical testing of oral appliances and 3D-printing applications.

He is the head of the dental special care unit at the Antwerp University Hospital that is primarily involved with multidisciplinary clinical treatment and research in patients diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea. He has published in the leading peer-reviewed scientific journals, and in 2017 Prof. Braem received the “Pierre Robin Award” from the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. In addition, he is the honorary president of the European Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine that has installed a dental sleep medicine accreditation program to join with national dental sleep medicine societies in Europe.

Dr. Aditi Desai

Dr. Aditi Desai is current President of the British Society of Dental Sleep Medicine (BSDSM) and President of the British Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (BADSM). She is President of Odontology, Royal Society of Medicine, and on the Council of Sleep Section of Royal Society of Medicine. She serves on the Board of the Association of Respiratory Technology and Physiology (ARTP).

Dr. Aditi now limits her practice to the management of patients with sleep disorders that require dental management. She works closely with a team of sleep specialists as part of a multidisciplinary team from HCA Outpatients at Shard, London Bridge Hospital, Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospital in Wimpole Street, London. Aditi’s passion is to teach dentistry’s role in treating OSA patients. She teaches dentists and the entire dental team as well as physicians to increase awareness, provide education, and access to trained dentists in order that these patients receive the care they deserve.

Prof. Jan Hedner

Dr. Jan Hedner is a specialist in Clinical Pharmacology and Sleep Medicine and a Professor of Sleep Medicine at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden, since 2000. He has more than 285 published papers in the fields of respiratory regulation, sleep apnea, cardiovascular morbidity, sleep apnea-related epidemiology, and clinical trials in sleep medicine. He pioneered the sleep field in Sweden as a founder of the sleep laboratory in Göteborg in the 1980-ties. He has been a Visiting Professor at the Sydney University, Australia, and University Paris-Sud, France, and has hosted several international researchers in the Göteborg facility.

He is a former President of the Swedish Sleep Research Association, national Swedish head coordinator of a sleep specialist and sleep clinic accreditation activities, and has been a coordinating investigator of several larger clinical trials in insomnia and sleep apnea. He is also one of the initiators of the Swedish Sleep Apnea Quality Registry (SESAR) and the European Sleep Apnea Database (ESADA).

Prof. Jean Louis Pépin

Dr. Jean Louis Pépin directs the HP2 (Hypoxia and Physiopathology) laboratory, which is one of the world-renowned laboratories dedicated to the study of sleep apnea and chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH). A unique platform (“HypE”) allows the exposure of healthy human volunteers, rodents, or cells to various hypoxic regimens to mimic physiological, pathological (sleep apnea/chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)) or environmental (altitude) conditions. Jean Louis Pépin has combined various expertise to make advances in fundamental and clinical research on chronic intermittent hypoxia. During those past years, the HP2 laboratory has depicted the molecular portrait of the multi-organ deleterious consequences of intermittent hypoxia (IH) and developed several innovative therapeutic modalities.

Jean Louis Pépin had a strong involvement in clinical research and epidemiological studies (large cohorts, registries, and big data/artificial intelligence programs). He has experience in innovation (> 10 patents) in clinical trials and industrial partnerships. He was the PI of LIFE, a transdisciplinary research program involving 70 researchers on evidence-based societal and environmental control of chronic diseases.

Prof. Dr. Christoph Schöbel

Prof. Dr. Christoph Schöbel completed his training as a specialist in internal medicine with a focus on cardiology at the Clinic for Cardiology and Angiology of the Berlin Charité. After his license to practice medicine, he was given the opportunity to become a study doctor at the Interdisciplinary Sleep Medicine Center of the Charité. In the further course, he acquired additional qualifications in sleep medicine and somnology. Until he moved to Essen, Christoph Schöbel was the specialist in charge of the cardiology university outpatient department on the Charité Mitte campus.

Dr. Schöbel is an active member of the German Society for Sleep Research and Sleep Medicine (DGSM) and is currently the spokesman for the working group “Circulation and Sleep” and a scientific committee member. His specialty at “Germany Sleeps Healthy” is in the field of telemedicine and eHealth.

APAC Advisory Board

Dr. Marcus McMahon

Dr. Marcus McMahon is a Respiratory and Sleep Disorders physician. He is a member of the Australasian Sleep Association (ASA), the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and a member of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand. Marcus served on the Board of the ASA as the Finance Chair (2015 – 2018) and subsequently as the Chair in Innovation and Strategy (2018 – 2109). Marcus is currently undertaking further studies through Monash Business School through the Epworth Summit Program, a bespoke program for medical leaders at Epworth Healthcare.

Marcus has broad experience in the assessment and management of complex sleep disorders and has published articles on shift work disorder.

Based at Epworth Hospital in Richmond, Marcus also works for the Victorian Respiratory Support Service, a statewide service dedicated to the provision of non-invasive ventilation for people with chronic respiratory failure, based at Austin Health in Melbourne. Marcus is passionate about medical education, having established DeltaMed, a medical education company, over 20 years ago. He holds a master’s degree in Medical Education and has been an active member of multiple committees and working groups for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians for the last 20 years.

Associate Professor Michael Stubbs

Associate Professor Michael Stubbs completed his Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 1989 (University of Adelaide), and has both specialist Masters degrees in Oral Pathology 1998 (University Adelaide) and Oral Medicine (University Melbourne) 2002, and holds a Fellowship from the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in General Dentistry and Oral Medicine

A/Professor Stubbs practices as an Oral Medicine specialist in Melbourne, and is the clinical editor for the international dental magazine ‘Australasian Dentist.’ Michael lectures both nationally and internationally in the field of Oral Medicine which includes Dental sleep medicine; Oral and-Facial pain including temporomandibular disorders; Oral mucosal and jaw disease.
